How to commission
After Initial contact by phone or email we will arrange an appointment to discuss the technical details of the commission, possible techniques, If a window opening already exists, take accurate measurements of the apertures, and generally get a feel for the stained glass window's location. We then discuss ideas for the design with you, it is generally beneficial if the client has had some input into the work, but is not essential, we are able to design from the simplist thought to the most detailed brief.
The next stage is the production of a full size working drawing in black and white. This drawing is known as the cartoon and shows the details and tones and the positioning of the leads. The cartoon contains information for the fabrication of the window, such as width of lead cames to be used and positioning of support bars. The cutline determines the exact shapes of the glass. At this stage you are invited to view the cartoon for final approval. This final approval will be the basis of the commissioning process.
The design will then be presented to the client for discussion. We then discuss the stained glass designs, and listen to any feedback. If the client wishes to make additional changes, we make any required modifications. We are happy to revisit a design idea until the client is happy with the overall look, as we wish you to cherish our stained glass for many years to come.
Each piece of glass is carefully selected with reference to the design for type and colour in partnership with the client. If the client is choosing some original pieces the adjoining colours will be selected to harmonise not only with the centre piece but also the external context. We have hundreds of samples of different colours ,textures and glass types to choose from so this is an exciting partnership between the client and Colin Conroy Stained Glass.
The glass is cut with tungsten tipped oil filled wheel cutter to shape over the cutline keeping the score mark just inside the pen line, which represents the heart of the lead came. When the glass selection and cutting is completed it is then laid on a bench to double check if they are working together as envisaged
The next stage is assembling all the individual pieces of glass together using "H" section lead cames and soldering the joints. The window is waterproofed and strengthened by brushing a specialized "cement", into the spaces between the flanges of the leads and the glass. Then it is cleaned and polished allowing the cement to harden. The stained glass panel is then completed for collection. We know that you will be astounded and delighted by how beautiful and unique your panel is and will be pleased to provide Full Payment on completion of the Panel.
